Individuals
Many people are afraid of the stigma sometimes associated with therapy. However, most people struggle with one or another issue at some point in their journeys. The problem may be shorter-term like the end of a relationship, the loss of a loved one, or a career crisis or it may be more long-standing like depression, anxiety, or unresolved childhood issues.
Therapy provides individuals support, the format for self-exploration, and a process for true change. Engaging in therapy can be a very scary idea, but remember that you are in charge of the process. You can determine the pace and provide feedback to your therapist if you feeling overwhelmed or are dissatisfied with the process.
Couples
Couples seek outside help for a variety of reasons. Some are in true crisis and need help developing a plan to get back on track and/or restoring trust. Some have just noticed an increase in arguments and want to discover what is going on before it escalates.
Couples therapy provides: 1) a safe place for each member to talk about his or her needs, concerns, fears, and/or hurts and disappointments; and 2) education and tools that the couple can use at home that encourage cooperation and facilitate communication.
